A new social network called 7just7 (only in German despite the English name) has started a marketing campaign to win users for its platform. The first user who adds one million “friends” to his network will get one million euro. Wow. Big numbers. But to me it is just marketing blah. Probably nobody will get this million…

I doubt that such a campaign will motivate users to add as many people as possible to their network as the hurdle for the reward is just too high. Maybe it would be more efficient to give each user an euro per person he adds to his network.

But in general I think it is a bad idea to use financial rewards to motivate people to add other people to their network. If the users really like your platform, they will do that automatically, and else, well, you then have a problem ;-)
